In the wake of the controversy surrounding former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour’s pardon of over 200 inmates, newly-minted Governor Phil Bryant released a statement advocating for a constitutional amendment that limits the Governor’s power to pardon.
According to Governor Bryant’s spokesman, Mick Bullock, Bryant asked Chairman of the Senate Constitution Committee Michael Watson to review the language in the state constitution as it pertains to pardons. From there, the Governor hopes to develop a constitutional amendment that will address this “important issue” by limiting the Governor’s power to issue pardons.
Only 3 days after being sworn-in, Governor Bryant is already delivering on his promise to bring reform to the state. Bryant’s willingness to stand up for what he believes in, even in the face of the outgoing Governor from his own party, bodes well for the four years ahead.
